To the Colonial Secretary,

Dear Sir,

HONG K ONG.

13th July, 1900.

In reply to your letter No.4964/07 dated 30th June, 1908,

I have the to acknowledge receipt of the enclosed proposed types of goods wagona, and to say that I donsider the types serviceable and

quite satisfactory.

I notice that the proposed length of the longer wagons over

frames, is 38 feet, while that of the types in use on the Northern

Railways of China varies between 32' 6" and 37' 6".

I consider however that 38' 0" is a good length to adopt, also that a 19' 0" covered goods car might be found serviceable.

The type of buffer below centre coupling is shown similar

to that used on the S.N. Railway, and those in use on that line were

not found very satisfactory, though the fault might possibly be

remedied by stiffening the connections to frames.

As far as I can make out from types of Northern Railways,

the same buffers are used on wagons as on passenger coaches, namely,

male and female, pin buffer on either side of the Janney coupling.

I shall be glad to hear from you what general types you

decide to adopt for all classes of rolling stock. My intention is to

ask the Northern Railways for outline specifications and drawings for

60 ft. or 61 ft. passenger cars and 38 ft. low sided and covered wagone,

and possibly a 19 ft. wagon, and at the same time or at some subsequent

time, to ask them to tender for same, probably against English manu-

facturers.

Yours faithfully,

,letu ni noomi
